Intricate objects of armor, textiles of pageantry from Europe, Japan, India and Tibet. Drawings and prints as well.

   New Gallery for the Art of Native North America Currently on-going   New Galleries for the Art of Arab Lands: Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia   Opens November 1, 2011 - On-going
  ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Existing Collections : Restored/Renovated  the American Wing displays the interior of a Frank Lloyd Wright house - perfect for 4th graders' architecture unit.   Also the American Wing has re-hung many paintings including re-known Emmanuel Leutze' "Washington Crossing the Delaware"   Also,  The Temple of Dendur -  True Egyptian Art and Architecture experience for 3rd graders. The Egyptian Wing displays actual  mummy cases!    Outside behind the Metropolitan Museum, visit Cleopatra's Needle , a genuine, 2000 year-old  71 foot high Egyptian obelisk. (32 horses had to drag it to its current location from New York Port in 1880, when it was presented as a gift to the United States by Egypt. The obelisk form inspired the Washington  Monument in Washington, D.C.).

 
Works of  Renoir, Monet and Degas are always on display in the Impressionism Rooms, including one of the casts of Degas'  statue "Little Dancer" of the young ballerina.  (our 3rd graders study these artists)

The building itself is a work of Art designed by Architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The main gallery section from the exterior view resembles a tornado made of stone - inside it is a continuous spiral ramp (not staircase.)  Take your children to walk inside one of the most famous Frank Lloyd Wright buildings!    Our 4th graders study his "Form follows Function" architecture by learning about his masterpiece "Falling Water".

   _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________     Philadelphia Museum of Art  Ben Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA     www.philamuseum.org.     Philadelphia Treasures Eakin's Gross Clinic and Saint-Gauden's Angel of Purity   This painting was almost sold away, but saved by Philadelphians to be shown where it was painted. 3rd graders have a chance to see the painting they study - how large it is, how it looks up close!   An Eakins Masterpiece Restored: Seeing The Gross Clinic Anew   Within this wonderful museum so close - A Japanese Tea House,  The Interior of a Chinese Temple,  A Renaissance Cloister,     Medeival Arms and Armor, Impressionists paintings,  a cast of Degas "Little Dancer" ballerina statue and more!     ____________________________________________________________________________ PAFA The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts   118 North Broad Street Philadelphia, PA 215 - 972 - 7600                  www.pafa.org/Museum   The building is itself an example of architectural sculpture with its Grand Staircase and Moroccan arches in the main entrance. The building was designed by Frank Furness and George Hewitt - famous Philadelphia Architects.   This is an Art Museum and an Art School.  When you visit, you may see some classes attending an Art History talk in one of the galleries or students drawing or painting in front of a statue or painting!
Current Exhibit:   The exciting installation of Claes Oldenberg's  giant "Paint Torch"  outdoor Public Sculpture in the newly designed Lenfest Plaza adjacent to the museum !
